Where I Write

It’s not glamorous or spacious at all (and half the time, it ends up being the “store room” for diapers, laundry detergent, and roles of toilet paper—lovely, I know—and anything else we can’t find a place for after a big trip to Costco), but one thing I’m so grateful for is a real office to call my own—a place where I can close the door, have a little peace, and be creative. When we bought our house six years ago, my husband graciously let me have the only “office” in the house (which is really just a room we converted from an old laundry room on the first floor). I’ve gone through many chairs, finally trading in a cuter one for this ergonomic number that may not be that great looking, but it doesn’t leave me with a stiff back.

My office is a thoroughfare in this house. It has two doors, so the kids ride their trucks in and out, and leave a path of toys and messiness in the their wake. It connects to the family room, so I can sneak off to write an email or work on a blog post (like now!) while they play or watch Sesame Street in the mornings.

I’ve written hundreds of articles, thousands of blog posts and three and a half books in this office. 🙂

Oh Sarah, I love a peek into your writing room. This picture looks neat and organized, nothing like my messy less than photographic desk. My desk is in the area that might have been our breakfast nook, but we needed a home for a desk etc.
I’m so glad you have shared this with your readers.

It’s great to see the space where you do your writing. After reading “Violets of March”, I would say it works very well for you! The desk in my office has a sign on it which reads “A cluttered desk is a sign of genius.” Need I say more? Wish mine looked as neat and orderly as yours. Thanks for giving us a peek into your office.

Love it! And I’m jealous. My “office” is a brown leather chair in our living room. I too have little people underfoot while I work. But I’m encouraged by this quote from Stephen King: “In truth, I’ve found that any day’s routine interruptions and distractions don’t much hurt a work in progress and may actually help it in some ways. It is, after all, the dab of grit that seeps into an oyster’s shell that makes the pearl, not pearl-making seminars with other oysters.”

Beautiful! I have a fascination with other people’s offices and desks and general workspaces, I find them inspiring. Yours is especially cute. One day, I’ll get around to sharing mine with the world.
